- Cost: CAD 150 permit plus CAD 85 biometrics.
- Show CAD 22,895 in living funds through a GIC, separate from tuition. The SDS fast stream closed in November 2024; everyone uses the regular stream now.
- You need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) unless you are doing a masters or PhD at a public university.
- Approval rates for Indian applicants sit around 40 to 55 percent. Complete file, honest SOP, clean funds.

Fifty-one of the 100 destinations record a proof figure under $5,000, and the median is $4,450. Only six destinations, Canada among them, sit in the $15,000 to $19,999 band, and only seven record $20,000 or more. A funds bar that high is not a formality. It shapes the application, the GIC, the statement of purpose, and, as the next section explains, a conversation many students never rehearse.
The second interview nobody warns you about
A study permit approval is not the last conversation. When you land, a border officer can question you again at the port of entry: where you will study, how your funds work, where you will live, and when you plan to leave. Port of entry questioning follows the logic of the permit itself. Expect plain questions. Which school, which program, and when does it start? Where will you live, and how are you getting there from the airport? How is your first year paid for, and what happens in the second? Can you show the GIC confirmation and the acceptance letter? The answers that work are short, factual, and identical in substance to the written file. The answers that cause trouble are new information, numbers that do not match, or a study plan the officer hears for the first time at the booth.
Carry the paper to back it up in your hand luggage, not in checked baggage: the passport, the letter of introduction, the acceptance letter, and the funds confirmations. If your answers and documents agree, the conversation is usually brief. A mock service earns its fee precisely here, because almost nobody rehearses the arrival interview. Why the funds band raises the stakes
Canada's position in the spread explains the scrutiny. With a recorded proof figure of $16,883, in a band shared by only six of 100 destinations, the Canadian file asks officers to trust a large and specific money story: tuition accounted for, a GIC holding the living funds, and a source for anything beyond that. Every part of it has to survive being said out loud, months after it was written down, at the end of a long flight. That is a rehearsal problem, and it is the one part of the Canada process you fully control.
